Double Inertia Reel Harness

Short Description
A restraint system for wheelchair occupants consisting of floor tracking, webbing straps and locking devices. Tracking and straps can be customised to accommodate a variety of wheelchair dimensions in multi user situations. The inertia reel forms a lap and diagonal restraint. The unit retracts when not in use. Suitable for use with powered and manual wheelchairs.

Features
This wheelchair occupant restraint is used whenever a person travels seated in the wheelchair. It is used in conjunction with a wheelchair restraint. It has two points of attachment to the vehicle floor. It is suited for use with all common makes of wheelchair. It consists of a Double Inertia Reel unit that forms the lap and diagonal belts and a Stalk with belt buckle.

FLOOR ANCHOR POINTS - Three types of aluminium floor tracking is available. Two are recessed into the floor : the Heavy Duty Rail and Low Profile Rail. The Surface Rail is fitted above the floor. It is into the floor tracking that the inertia reel and stalk are anchored, via clips, behind the occupant. The tracking is placed on the floor longitudinally.

RESTRAINT OF WHEELCHAIR - A choice of wheelchair restraints is available and is required to be used in conjunction with wheelchair occupant restraints. The wheelchair restraint is also anchored onto the floor tracking via clips.

RESTRAINT OF OCCUPANT - The webbing lap belt passes over the occupants lap, the diagonal belt passes from the reel unit over the occupant's shoulder and diagonally across the body.


Method Of Use
1. Position and restrain the wheelchair.
2. Clip the double inertia reel unit and the seat belt buckle stalk into the floor tracking.
3. Pull the belt around the body and clip the buckle into the floor mounted stalk. The lower section of the belt is positioned around the pelvis and the upper section over the shoulder.
4. Position the belt comfortably then the clips can be fastened to stop the belts recoiling, thus relieving the tension on the occupant's shoulders.


Models
Double Inertia Reel Harness - the standard model.

Split Reel Double Inertia - similar to the Double Inertia Reel except the lap seat belt and the shoulder belt can be separated.

Double Inertia Full Harness - comprises two double inertia reels : one attached to the standard harness; the other attaches to the standard harness as a brace. It provides a full harness with the seat belt passing over both shoulders and the lap.


Cleaning Requirements
The restraint can be washed with warm soapy water. Abrasives and chemical cleaners should not be used. The webbing should be checked regularly for signs of wear or fraying. The Double Inertia Reel has a cover, which can be cleaned.

Caution
The webbing should be checked regularly for signs of wear or fraying. Nicks greater than 1mm necessitates replacement. The product must be replaced immediately after it has been worn during a collision.
No restraint system is considered safe to use with the occupant of a scooter travelling while sitting in the scooter. The occupant must transfer to a normal vehicle seat for the journey.


Additional Comment
When purchasing a vehicle wheelchair restraint, consider also other vehicles in which the person may travel in their wheelchair (eg taxis, school bus etc.). This may influence the choice of restraint which is chosen for the family / individuals vehicle, as not all restraint fittings or modifications that are required on a wheelchair are compatible with all restraint systems.
