RB Systems Signaller

ILC Reference NO 51:11:001
Item sourced from ILC SA database

Signaller

Short Description
A driving aid which is installed into a vehicle to enable a driver to program and operate up to ten functions on the car (such as headlights, indicators, horn and wipers) without removing their hands from the steering wheel or hand control. Suitable for most vehicle types. May be hard wired to the hand control lever or fitted to a wheel spinner via a radio frequency remote operation.

Price Guide
Refer to supplier information for pricing details.

Features
The unit is secured to the steering wheel column by a cylindrical strap that has a platform that the Signaller is secured to. The Signaller unit is made of a lightweight plastic with rubber buttons.

The Signaller's functions operate from six large buttons. The six push buttons have icons to indicate which item is being activated and feature back lighting which illuminate when the buttons are turned on.

The six buttons include:
Left and Right Turn signals
Wipers (intermittent, low and high speed)
Lights (flash plus high/low beam dipping)
Hazard
Horn
In addition to these functions the (*) button can be used for any additional function such as a front window washer, fog lamps, cruise control, rear wiper etc.

The Signaller provides a driver with the option to position the angle of the steering wheel bracket/keypad to any finger or thumb while driving; wherever it is most comfortable.

The Signaller may be fitted on a steering wheel with additional modified driving controls, such as spinner knobs. Alternatively it can be fitted onto a modified hand control or a foot control system that requires the driver to use a lever system to accelerate and brake the vehicle or from any other switch assembly for those with limited finger dexterity (e.g. headrest or bump switches).

Models
Models available include:
RB-HC (Hand Control)
RB-RF (Steering Wheel)
RB-SW (Headrest)
RB-SW6 (Additional custom switch(s))

Safety Features
All of the vehicle's electrical functions can be operated from one location by one hand, at any time during the course of driving.
Existing vehicle controls remain dominant which means that if a non-disabled driver uses the vehicle their activation of the factory controls - i.e. lights, wipers, indicators etc - will all override the Signaller.
The time period for signal cancellation is programmable to suit each individual driver's requirement from 10 - 60 seconds. However, signals will not automatically cancel while the brake is applied (ie. while sitting at traffic lights). Once the brake is released, a timer again automatically engages. This safety feature negates the necessity for drivers to be mindful of switching signals back on if cancel prematurely, or remembering to turn them off.
Signaller will detach with the spinner knob automatically whenever the spinner is detached from its mount allowing those without need of its aid to drive the vehicle unhindered.

Installation
The manufacturer recommends that the Signaller be installed by an auto electrician to ensure correct installation. Installation will take approximately one day.

Additional Comment
All existing vehicle controls remain dominant, which means that if a driver without a disability uses the vehicle, their activation of the lights, wipers, indicators and other functions will override the Signaller. The signals will not automatically cancel while the break is applied.

A time period of 10 - 15 seconds can be programmed into the unit, allowing for accidental pressing of a button before the action is completed.

Licence & Insurance Requirements
Inspection of Modifications
In South Australia some modifications to a vehicle must be inspected and approved by Transport SA.

Driver's Licence Requirements
A driver who has an illness or disability which affects their ability to drive is required to provide Medical Records at the Motor Registration Division with a certificate from their Doctor stating that they are fit to drive. An assessment is arranged to establish that they have the physical ability to drive and what modifications are recommended. Further training may be necessary and a reassessment when the person can demonstrate their ability to handle the vehicle safely with the modifications. The licence is then issued with the appropriate restrictions regarding type of vehicle and modifications required. Insurance companies should also be notified to ensure continued indemnity.

Insurance
To ensure insurance cover, the vehicle owner should advise their insurance company of the approved vehicle modifications, and the endorsed driver's licence where the modifications are for the driver with a disability.

Standards
For some types of equipment, specific Australian Standards are applicable to the materials used in, and the manufacturing processes applied to products. Compliance with relevant Standards is indicated by written certification that a product has been tested and assessed as compliant with specified Australian Standards. Purchasers are advised to check with the supplier or manufacturer of an item as to its compliance with the relevant Australian Standard(s).

Place Of Manufacture
New Zealand

Compatability
This device is compatible with the majority of vehicles, and compatible with CAN - BUS (computerised) electrical systems now found in newer vehicles.
The Signaller has the ability to receive commands from any other driving aid e.g. head rest buttons. It can also activate the radio provided the unit is wired through to the steering wheel.
