Features to look for when buying equipment:
TV with teletext - allows television captions to be decoded. Most major manufacturers have a number of models of teletext televisions. These can be bought at major department stores and specialist retailers.

VCR with teletext - (not available in Australia August 1999) allows for decoding of captions and for programmes to be recorded. A teletext TV is not required unless the viewer wishes to watch one programme with captions and record a different programme with captions at the same time.

TV with CCD - allow closed captions on video to be decoded. These are not teletext captions. A special VCR is not required. TEAC has the only CCD televisions available at present in Australia. Some department stores and specialist retailers stock them.

Plug-in closed caption video decoder (CCD) - allows a person to watch closed captioned videos using their existing VCR. Deafness Resources sells the Video Reader - a plug in closed caption video decoder A teletext decoder / TV / VCR to watch TV captions is still required.

VCR without teletext - allows open captioned videos to be watched.
